The
President's Medal recognizes a member of the College Park community
who has made extraordinary contributions to the social, intellectual,
and cultural life of our campus. The Medal was presented during
the Faculty and Staff Convocation on Tuesday, October 16, at 3:00
in Memorial Chapel.
Dr.
Goldstein began his academic career at the Ohio State University
in 1963. He came to the University of Maryland in 1966 and served
as Professor and Chair of the Psychology Department from 1981
to 1991. In 1991, he was selected to be Dean of the College of
Behavioral and Social Sciences. He has also served Maryland as
Acting Dean of the Graduate School and as Acting Provost and Vice
President for Academic Affairs.
Dr.
Goldstein's research career as an industrial-organizational psychologist
has focused on issues facing individuals as they enter and are
promoted in work organizations. As such, he is especially interested
in how individuals learn about organizations, how they are selected
and promoted, and how they are trained by organizations. He also
has a strong interest in understanding and resolving the constraints
that affect people who enter organizations, such as the problems
of race and gender discrimination. In this role, he has served
as a consultant to both public and private sector organizations.
The fourth edition of his well-known book Training in Organizations,
co-authored with Professor Kevin Ford, was published in 2001 by
Wadsworth. Dr. Goldstein is also author of the training chapter
in the Handbook of Industrial Organizational Psychology
and is editor of the 1989 Frontiers Series volume on Training
and Development in Organizations (Jossey-Bass).
In
1992, Dr. Goldstein received the Distinguished Service Award from
the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. In 1995,
he received the Swanson Award for research excellence from the
American Society for Training and Development. He has also been
honored by being elected to serve as President for the Society
for Industrial and Organizational Psychology and by being elected
to serve as a member of the American Psychological Association's
Council of Representatives, the Association's governing body.
He has been elected to Fellow status by the American Psychological
Association, the American Psychological Society and the Human
Factors Society. He has also served as associate editor of two
major research journals, the Journal of Applied Psychology
and the Human Factors journal, and has served as editor
for the Frontiers Book Series of the Society of Industrial
and Organizational Psychology. Currently, he is President of the
Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology Foundation.
