Echolocation in a complex acoustic scene
Wing hair studies
Bat navigates a set of net openings while attempting to catch a tethered mealworm (slowed 12 times).
Red dots overlaid on the video are reflections detected by a motion tracking video system which tracks reflective markers placed on the bat. We use this for wing kinematic analysis.
- Raw video with vicon.avi
Trial in which bat navigates a set of net openings to reach a mealworm (slowed 20 times). Top panel: reflective markers from the bat are reconstructed in 3D using our motion tracking video system. The first net opening is from the floor to the two blue circles. The second net opening is within the 4 green markers. The mealworm is in pink and our ultrasound microphones are in yellow.
Bottom left panel: audio recording during the trial, with waveform and spectrogram. Bottom right panel: zoom view of bat reflective markers.
Social Influences on Foraging in Bats
Animation of a recording (2006.07.18.04) from a session on the day before the observer bat present (learning category 3) first emitted buzzes towards the mealworm.
Red and blue each represent a bat, and the synchronized audio and video data have been slowed 10×. Each circle represents an echolocation pulse emitted by that bat.
Based upon behaviour and call characteristics, the red bat is the demonstrator (Y31) and the blue bat is the observer (B47) in this trial. When the blue bat first appears,
note the close following behaviour of the blue bat (naïve juvenile observer) behind the red bat (trained demonstrator), which emits a feeding buzz later in the trial.
The portion of the video in which the bats disappear then reappear from another location is due to the bats temporarily leaving the field of view of both cameras.
- social calls
Echolocating bats cease vocalizing to avoid sonar jamming
The animation of two bats’ flight behavior and their corresponding echolocation calls. The color red marks the flight and echolocation
behaviors of one bat and the color blue marks these behaviors of the other bat. The upper panel shows the overhead view of paired bats’ flight trajectories, and
each open circle represents the bat’s position when it produced one vocalization. The green dot is the position of the tethered mealworm. The lower panels
display the call parameters of the bats’ vocalizations over the course of the trial. The first of these panels plots the pulse interval over the course ofthe trial, which
is the interval between the onsets of one vocalization and the next one. The middle panel displays call duration and the bottom panel displays the start (high)
and end (low) frequencies of the fundamental frequency of the FM sweep of each vocalization.
