The counseling psychology program is a joint program drawing on a strong collection of faculty from both the Department of Psychology and Education. The 2005 U.S. News and World Report ranks the counseling program in Counseling and Student Personnel Services first and a recent report from an external review committee cited the counseling program as one of the best in the country. Our students are a vital component to maintaining the strength of the counseling psychology program.

We are interested in attracting students with strong academic records, a commitment to being trained in a scientist-practitioner model, and diverse life experiences. There is a strong emphasis on research training and productivity. Our faculty conducts research and publishes in a variety of areas including therapy process and outcome research, vocational psychology, multicultural psychology, and interpersonal relationships.

Students apply either to the Counseling and Student Personnel Services program or Department of Psychology. Deciding whether to apply to the Department of Counseling and Personnel Services side of the program or Department of Psychology side of the program should be driven by one's interest in a faculty members' research program.

Thank you for your interest in the counseling psychology program at the University of Maryland, College Park.
