Research and Teaching Interests:
Benjamin Schneider was a Professor of Psychology at the University of Maryland
from 1982 to 2004 and was head of the Industrial and Organizational Psychology
Program until July 2003. He has also taught at Michigan State University and Yale
University and, for shorter periods of time, at Bar-Ilan University (Israel, on
a Fulbright), University of Aix-Marseille (France), Peking University (PRC), and
Dartmouth College’s Tuck School of Business Administration. Ben holds the
Ph.D. in Psychology (Maryland, 1967) and also an M.B.A. (C.U.N.Y., 1962). His
academic accomplishments include more than 90 journal articles and book chapters,
eight books, and appointment to the editorial review boards at various times of
the Journal of Applied Psychology, Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy
of Management Journal, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, and
the Journal of Service Research. Professional recognition for his accomplishments
include election to Fellowship in the American Psychological Association, the
American Psychological Society and the Academy of Management, President of the
Organizational Behavior Division of the Academy of Management, and President of
the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. Ben has also been awarded
the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology's 2000 Distinguished
Scientific Contributions Award. Ben is also listed in Who's Who in America and
derivative volumes.
Ben has two major streams of research, each of which has several subcategories.
One research stream concerns the role of manager personality in understanding
the structure, strategy, and climate/culture of organizations. His second stream
of research concerns research directed at understanding organizational designs
for service quality.
