Research and Teaching Interests:

Psychology professor Charles E. Sternheim has accepted the position of Acting Senior Associate Dean for the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences. In his new position he will be primarily responsible for faculty affairs. His new duties include overseeing academic, promotion and tenure procedures, department and chair periodic reviews, and working with academic units and special programs as they develop 5-year strategic plans. Dr. Sternheim welcomes the opportunity to work with the dean's office team of staff, faculty and administrators, and the individual units of the college. He is especially eager to assist Dean Edward Montgomery is his effort to "continue the college's ascent as a national leader in teaching and research."

Dr. Sternheim is a professor in the SensoriNeural and Perceptual Processes area of the Department of Psychology. He also served as Director of Undergraduate Studies (1997-2003). He received his Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Rochester and completed a two-year postdoctoral traineeship at Brown University prior to coming to the University of Maryland in 1968. His primary research interest is in color and spatial specificity in human vision.

Dr. Sternheim served on the Council of the University System Faculty (1992 -1997) and was chair of the Faculty Development Committee. He was a Lilly-Center for Teaching Excellence Teaching Fellow (1995-1996) and was appointed co-director of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences Teaching Fellows Program (1998-2000). He is a member of the provost's Advisory Committee on Admissions and Advising (1993-), the Advisory Council for Undergraduate Education (2001-) and the Advisory Board for the Maryland Center for Undergraduate Research (2000-). Dr. Sternheim is interested in faculty and student collaboration to support the scholarship of teaching and learning and is currently leading the campus program of the Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
