Research and Teaching Interests:

Karen M. O'Brien (Associate Professor) received her Ph.D. from Loyola University Chicago in 1993. Her research interests include investigating the career and life development of women and minorities with special attention to the influence of psychodynamic (e.g., attachment) and social-cognitive (e.g., self-efficacy) variables. She is also interested in studying adoptive families and examining training issues in psychology (e.g., graduate research training and supervision, counseling skills training for crisis workers). She is the associate editor of the Career Development Quarterly. She is a licensed psychologist in Maryland and maintains a small private practice in psychotherapy. She has written one book: Helping Skills: Facilitating Exploration, Insight and Action (with Hill), APA 1999.
