Running a research study with human participants
- Design your study, keeping in mind human participant protection guidelines. Completing the free, web-based course that NIH uses for human participant protection is highly advised.
- Complete an application for the Use of Human Subjects using the IRB-PAS System. Instructions for using the system can be found here. If you have questions about this process, contact the department IRB liason, Dr. Charles Stangor at cstangor232@charlesstangor.com.
- If you plan to use the Psychology Department Subject Pool, once you have received your reply from the IRB, send email to hsrcwebmaster@psyc.umd.edu. Include in your email the IRB approval number for your project.
- If you are using the subject pool, set up your experiment using Sona Systems . We provide a short guide to using Sona Systems for experimenters.
- If you make changes to your experiment, submit an addendum to the IRB
using the IRB-PAS System
.
- If you plan to collect or analyze data for more than one year, you will need to renew with the IRB 30 days before your approval expires, using the Renewal Application for Research Involving Human Subjects (MS Word Document).
