After College
Students graduating with a BA or BS in psychology from University of Maryland pursue a wide variety of future goals and training after graduation. Therefore, our curriculum is designed to provide students considerable flexibility in choosing both the direction and the intensity of their training in psychology.
Each year, the Psychology Department surveys graduating seniors about their plans after graduation. Individual students follow a variety of interesting pathways after graduation. You might find some of the results from the 2005 and 2006 Senior Surveys interesting.
10% of graduating seniors plan to attend graduate school in Psychology the year after graduation. The most common areas of graduate study include: Counseling Psychology, Social Psychology, Clinical Psychology, and Developmental Psychology. Other areas of interest include: Cognitive Psychology, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, School Psychology, Neurosciences, Forensic Psychology, Health Psychology, and others.
6% of graduating seniors plan to attend law school right after graduation. Another 8% are considering law school in the future.
4% of graduating seniors plan to attend medical school, dental school or another allied health sciences graduate schools right after graduation. Another 6% are considering the health sciences in the future.
34% of graduating seniors plan to work at a job or paid internship after graduation. Some of these students are considering graduate school in the future.
