Bachelor of Science (B.S. instead of B.A.) Option

Students who wish to pursue the Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.) must complete at least 5 courses/17 credits in mathematics and science.  Courses used to satisfy the math/science supporting course sequence required of all psychology majors (list A, given below) may be used to satisfy the requirement for the B.S. degree.  Please note, however, that all B.S. candidates must complete at least three advanced courses (list B, given below) and at least two lab courses.  Please consult with an advisor if you have any questions.

  1. Psychology Supporting Math and Science Courses (choose 2):

BSCI 105, 106
CHEM 131/132 (formerly CHEM103), 113
MATH 111, 140, 220
PHYS 121, 122

  1. Psychology Advanced Math and Science Courses (choose 3):

BSCI 201, 202, 222-224, 230, 312, 338A, 338D, 342, 360, 361, 363, 370, 375, 390, 392, 394, 410, 412-414, 416-426, 430-434, 436-440, 443-447, 451, 462-466, 470, 471, 473-475, 484, 485

CHEM 231 or higher except CHEM 287, 374, 395, 398, 399, 450, 498
CMSC 114 or higher except CMSC 307, 390, 498
MATH 141 or higher except MATH 210, 211, 220, 299, 478, 498, 499
PHYS 141 or higher except PHYS 170, 221, 222, 299, 305, 389, 395, 398, 399, 428, 490, 499
STAT 400 or higher

NOTE:

  1. These lists are subject to change.  We strongly recommend that you ask a psychology advisor to review the way you plan to satisfy the B.S. requirements and that a notation be made in your file.
  2. A GPA of 2.0 or higher must be obtained in the 17 credit supporting sequence.  For example, a grade of “D” may be counted towards the B.S. as long as the student has higher grades (“B” or better) in other classes to compensate for the “D.”
  3. Advanced math/science courses taken to fulfill the B.S. requirements may not be used to satisfy the CORE Advanced Studies requirement.
  4. You may not count a 300 or 400 level Advanced Science course used to fulfill the B.S. requirement in PSYC towards your Advanced Studies Requirement for CORE.
