Selection of Predoctoral Students

Admissions to the research training program will be decided upon by the Advisory Committee. The program is open to students admitted to the NACS program, or departments represented by any of the core faculty members. Predoctoral students can submit applications while applying to one of the participating departments or after being accepted by that department. Current UM students will be able to apply to the program at any time during their career. Students can be accepted into the training program only after they have been accepted by the NACS program and a home department. Once students have been accepted to a department the application will be forwarded to the training program Advisory Committee for consideration and support. On the application, students will indicate their interest in the program by noting which program faculty member they want to work with. Alternatively, the faculty members interested in a particular student (e.g. because of correspondence with that student) will be able to 'flag' a particular application when it is being evaluated by the home department. Since Training Program faculty are in specific departments, it will be quite easy to insure that all appropriate students are brought to the attention of the program.

Applications sent to the Advisory Committee will be evaluated for admissions and support by the Training Program. Admissions will be based upon (a) availability of funds to support the student, (b) interest expressed by the student in training in areas served by the program, (c) letters of recommendation, (d) grades, and (e) GRE scores. Whenever possible, each year's group of acceptable applicants will be brought to UM by the Training Program for personal interviews with faculty and current trainees.
