Congratulations!
The Department welcomes its newest addition courtesy of Michele Gelfand and Todd Betke who brought us joyful and jolly, Jeannete at Sibley Hospital just a scarce few weeks ago. Jeannete and parents are doing just fine, thank you. Jeannete is not yet ready for comps but the parents are doing their best.

The I/O area is leading cheers for the recent assistant professorships accepted by mark Ehrhart and Karen Holcombe Ehrhart. Karen and Mark had some tough choices to make since each of them had four job offers. After much deliberation, Mark and Karen chose San Diego State University where both of them received offers in Psychology. They join Beth Chung, and I/O graduate, who has recently moved to San Diego State in the Business School. Congratulations Karen and Mark!

Call for Nominations
The Graduate School invites nominations for speakers to participate in its Distinguished Lecturer Series in the coming 2001-2002 academic year. This series aims to bring to campus eminent intellectuals who can speak across disciplinary boundaries and engage non-specialists. Name recognition is essential. The format of the lectureship is as follows: two-day visits, which include one lecture to a general audience and seminars for students and faculty in the appropriate department. Send nominations by email or campus mail to Philip DeShong (pd10@umail.umd.edu), Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, 2101 Chemistry Building. All nominations are due by April 21, 2001.

Call for Proposals
The Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE), in partnership with a number of campus organizations, is organizing a major event for October 9, 2001: The Diversity Scholarship Showcase. The purpose of this event is twofold. First, it is to build student-faculty dialogue on issues related to diversity in education. Second, it is to highlight the tremendous quality of students' papers, projects, performances, and other creative work which students produce in their courses and other learning experiences. Students may submit work from any course, those specifically designated as CORE diversity courses, as well as those not so designated. Please see Denise Park for a copy of application form.
