Benjamin Schneider is Professor of Psychology at the University of Maryland and Chair of the Industrial and Organizational Psychology Program. He has also taught at Michigan State University and Yale University and, for shorter periods of time, at Bar-Ilan University (Israel, on a Fulbright), University of Aix-Marseille (France), Peking University (PRC), and Dartmouth College where Ben visited in the Tuck School of Business Administration in the Fall, 1999. Ben holds the Ph.D. in Psychology and also an M.B.A. His academic accomplishments include more than 90 journal articles and book chapters, six books and appointment to the editorial review boards at various times of the Journal of Applied Psychology, Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Journal, and the Journal of Service Research. His most recent book (with David E. Bowen) is Winning the Service Game (Harvard Business School Press, 1995). Professional recognition for his accomplishments include election to Fellowship in the American Psychological Association, the American Psychological Society and the Academy of Management, President of the Organizational Behavior Division of the Academy of Management, and President of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. In addition, Ben won (with Brent Smith, Sylvester Taylor, and John Fleenor) the Scientific Contributions Award given by the Human Resources Division of the Academy of Management for the best article published in 1998. Finally, Ben has been awarded the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology's 2000 Distinguished Scientific Contributions Award. Ben is also listed in Who's Who in America and derivative volumes.

Ben has two major streams of research, each of which has several subcategories. One research stream concerns the role of manager personality in understanding the structure, strategy, and climate/culture of organizations. This research program is based on a series of papers Ben did in the 1980s culminating in a piece called "The People Make the Place" (Personnel Psychology, 1987). Since then Ben has written several conceptual pieces on what has come to be called the ASA framework.

His second stream of research concerns research directed at understanding organizational designs for service quality. In this work Ben early demonstrated the linkage between employee experiences of work and the service quality experiences of the customers they serve. Ben and his colleagues (as well as others), have subsequently replicated this work several times (see Schneider, White and Paul, Journal of Applied Psychology, 1998). This research has resulted in numerous journal publications related to service quality and also to organizational climate. Thus, the research on employees of service organizations has had organizational climate as a foundation construct.

Current projects focus on integrating the two streams of research briefly outlined earlier. This research, funded first by the U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences (ARI) and more recently by the National Science Foundation (NSF), tests a model of the impact of manager personality on the service climate created in the work place. In addition to these more research-focused efforts, Ben is Vice President of Organizational and Personnel Research, Inc. Recent research consultantships have included the State of Alabama, Sotheby's, the Metropolitan Opera, IBM, Ingram-Micro, and American Express. Some of this work focuses on service and service climate and still other focuses on the development and implementation of selection and promotion examinations in the public sector. Both the more theoretical and the more applied projects have heavily involved students from the I/O program.
