Awards and Honors:

Congratulations to Alex Bierman (2007) who has won the Society for the Study of Social Problems (SSSP) Family Division Graduate Student Paper Competition!  The paper is based on his dissertation.  The award entails a cash prize and the opportunity to present the paper at the 2007 SSSP meetings in New York.

 

Congratulations to Joan Hermsen (1997; Associate Professor, University of Missouri-Columbia) for winning the 2006 William T. Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence and 2006 Excellence in Education Award at the University of Missouri-Columbia

 

 

Five alumni recently took on new positions. Congratulations to:

  • Philip Cohen (1999; Associate Professor, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) on becoming graduate director of the UNC department;

  • Timothy Moran (2000; SUNY-Stony Brook) on his promotion from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor;

    • Tim, along with Roberto Korzeniewicz (Associate Professor of Sociology, University of Maryland, College Park) was at the Russell Sage Foundation in Fall 2006 to write a book examining inequality from a global perspective, focused on rising economic disparities among countries around the world.

  • Morten Ender (1996; West Point) on becoming the Director of the Sociology Program at West Point;

  • Liana Sayer (2001; Assistant Professor, Ohio State University) on becoming chair of the Distinguished Career Award Committee, ASA Family Section 2006-2007;

  • Perla Werner (1996; Professor, University of Haifa, Mount Carmel, Israel) on becoming the Dean of the Faculty of Social Welfare and Health Studies.
