Computational Social Science and the Environment

We have two joint openings designed to expand Maryland’s strengths in the computational aspects of the social dimensions of environmental change. These appointments are part of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences effort to make three appointments in this area in anthropology/sociology, economics/geography and geography/sociology. Applicants should have advanced computational skills integrating social science data into computational models. Each appointed person would participate in interdisciplinary, environmental projects within Sociology and across the College. One objective is to develop a college-wide course on computational social science that would fit into an interdepartmental sequence. Rank is associate or full professor. Tenure will be in the department closest to the applicant’s background.

The University of Maryland is located near Washington, D.C., (“inside the beltway”) and close to Washington’s many environmental research resources.

Administrative Coordinator

The Department seeks to fill the position of Administrative Coordinator who would assume the following duties:

  • Executive assistant to the department chair to include managing the chair's schedule and appointments. Prepare reports and materials for department meetings. Prepare and distribute announcements and email reminders of department events. Manage department relations with local, national, and international professional associations.

  • Manage the department-wide process for Appointment, Promotion and Tenure as well as annual Merit Reviews. Serve as department liaison for the chair with the Dean's office and other campus units for APT and other official procedures.

  • Coordinate departmental activities, hospitality and travel arrangements for invited guests and speakers; plan receptions at professional meetings.

  • Coordinate scheduling of department seminar and meeting rooms. Maintain department email reflectors. Manage department directories, committee lists, rosters and contact lists. Organize and manage communication with department alumni and donors.

  • Work as part of a team with the Chair, Associate Chair and the department's business office. Help supervise students on their daily front office assignments.

Bachelor's degree is preferred as well as three years of professional experience, preferably in higher education, preferably at Maryland. Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills a must. Candidate must be flexible, accurate and able to work independently. Candidate must have a strong track record of attendance and punctuality. Proficient knowledge of MS Office applications particularly MS Word and Excel.
