Renewal of Research Projects The STAR division of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Agency has again renewed our one-year contract to work on problems that the division faces. Jeff Lucas is a partner in this research. New Relationships and Potential Research Projects The Center for Innovation and the Beaufort, Jasper and Hampton Counties Community Health Services, Inc. (BJHCHS) have formed a relationship to raise money to evaluate the effectiveness of creating social networks and community mobilization on reducing obesity in a predominately African-American community, Sheldon Township. Effectively reducing obesity would reduce health care costs, lengthen the duration of life, and provide a better quality of life as well. Wilbur Hadden and Jerald Hage were invited down to Sheldon Township to observe the various efforts that are made and to meet with the leadership council and the medical council. Presently the Center for Innovation is seeking funding to evaluate the impact of social networks on health care. The School of Public Health, University of Liverpool, Liverpool, England has asked Jerald Hage to develop a strategy so that the information feedback from the use of LQAS would be better utilized in the elimination of malaria in Orissa State, India. The intent is to create inter-organizational relationships between the villages and the districts of the state government for determining the obstacles that prevent the use of nets and sprays in particular villages. This research project is funded and Hage will travel to India during the month of December to collect data and suggest experiments for raising more money and increasing the efficacy of LQAS. The Center for Innovation and the University of Santiago, Santiago, Chile are exploring the possibility of a joint research project to use university extension to stimulate innovation in the small and medium businesses in Chile. If funded, this project would start in January, 2012.
