Radical innovations' novel technologies and transformational discoveries have recently come to the forefront of the political agendas of many countries.  In the U.S. a recent report of the National Academy of Science prompted several senators to meet at the White House to discuss how to create transformational discoveries (press release of Senator Domenici, December 15, 2005).  In particular, there has been increasing recognition of the need to study research organizations as a special category.  With this in mind, the Center for Innovation is developing a theory about research organizations with the following highlights:

Ø      What are the characteristics of transformational research organizations, that is research organizations with high rates of radical innovation and that can transform their scientific environments?

Ø      What kinds of research projects/organizations are there and how should they be managed?

Ø      What impact does organizational changes of various kinds have on the innovation performance in research organizations?

Current Research Projects include

  1. A three level research study of radical innovation in bio-medicine in the Institut Pasteur and the French scientific institutional environment from 1880-1980.

  2.  The use of the Jordan Research Environment survey in Sandia National Laboratories

  3. The use of the Jordan Research Environment survey in STAR of NOAA.

  4. The study of several co-location projects in Sandia National Laboratories

Recent Conference Papers include:

  1. Hage, Jerald. 2006. "Radical Innovation and Institutional Change:  French Biomedicine, 1888-1919." Presented at the 2006 Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, St. Louis, MO, February 17.
