CHARLES H. COATES COMMEMORATIVE AWARD PROGRAM

ESTABLISHED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND

The Department of Sociology at the University of Maryland is pleased to announce the establishment of the Charles H. Coates Commemorative Award Program. The program is intended to recognize the contributions of Maryland alumni and faculty members to the field of military sociology, and to assist current graduate students in the dissemination of the results of important thesis and dissertation research. The program is supported by the Charles H. Coates Commemorative Fund, established by the Coates family to honor the contributions of Dr. Charles H. Coates for his service at the University of Maryland from 1955 until his death in 1972, and for his contributions to military sociology. While at Maryland, Professor Coates wrote the first textbook in military sociology, and established the first college courses in military sociology and the sociology of war. Maryland has emerged as a major international center far study and research in these fields.

Each year the program recognizes one alumnus/alumna or faculty member of the Maryland program and one graduate student who has made a significant contribution to the field. Past Coates Awardees include the following:
