Sociology 498: Homelessness

Average (mean) incomes among the homeless

Rossi found that the average monthly income among the Chicago homeless was $168. In inflation adjusted dollars in the year 2000, that would be about $253. It is hard to imagine living on that low an income.

We make five comparisons:
graph of mean income for 4 homeless samples To other national data to see how typical Rossi's Chicago results are.
mean Chicago incomes To data on the Chicago non-homeless to see the association between poverty and homelessness
mean US 1986 incomes To U.S. data on the formerly homeless to suggest whether poverty is associated with leaving homelessness.
mean incomes by
homeless type To U.S. data on length and type of homelessness to suggest whether poverty is associated with more "severe" homelessness.
