Jencks: The Homeless

Jencks's macro evidence about living alone:

"The number of working-age adults who were not married rose from 22 million in 1970 to 52 million in 1990.

"The number who were not living with any other adult rose just as rapidly, from 8 million in 1970 to 20 million in 1990.

"Other things equal, these changes should have led to a steady increas in homelessness after 1970.

"Other things were not equal during the 1970s, because unmarried adults were becoming more affluent.

"After 1980, however, that pattern was reversed and the risks associated with living alone rose."
