Sociology 498: Homelessness

Liebow: Tell Them Who I Am

Liebow's analyses of causes

"Homeless people are homeless because they do not have a place to live."
Elliot Liebow, Tell Them Who I Am, chapter 7, page 223.

"Homelessness is rooted hard and deep in poverty." Tell Them Who I Am, chapter 7, page 224.

"People are not homeless because they are physically disabled, mentally ill, abusers of alcohol or other drugs, or unemployed. However destructive and relevant these conditions may be, they do not explain homelessness; most phsyically disabled people,m most mentally ill people, most alcoholics and drug addicts, and most unemployed persons do have places to live. Tell Them Who I Am, chapter 7, page 223.

"Among the homeless women in shelters and on the street, for example, are many women who would probably not be sufficiently productive to command a living wage under any conditions of wage labor." Tell Them Who I Am, chapter 7, page 226.

"Many of them are homeless because their relatives and friends, under the gun themselves because of their worsening economic situations, can no longer afford to care for still another dependent." Tell Them Who I Am, chapter 7, page 226.
